Cosmetic Procedures

BLEPHAROPLASTY

SI Dr Bill treatments (1)

Blepharoplasty (or eye surgery) is a common aesthetic surgical procedure that can not only improve the appearance of sagging and ageing skin around the eye area but can also improve your vision by lifting drooping skin.

Blepharoplasty can help:

  • Improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes (crow’s feet)
  • Improve the appearance of puffy eyes (under-eye bags)
  • Create a more youthful look
  • Get rid of excess skin
  • Improve your vision
  • Eliminate migraines

Upper blepharoplasty

An upper blepharoplasty (or upper eyelid lift) is helpful for patients whose skin is ageing and sagging down over and around the upper eyes and eyelids. This procedure lifts the skin above and around the corner of the eyes creating a more youthful appearance.

This technique suits patients with naturally hooded eyes, a condition that can cause irritation and difficulty applying makeup. It can also affect your vision and cause the eyelashes to be hidden under the skin, making you look older than you are.

Creating a new shape to the face will not only remove wrinkles and remove any excess skin and sagging, but also improve vision impairment. The scars from an upper eyelid lift are usually hidden in the natural crease on the upper eyelid and are rarely/barely visible.

Lower blepharoplasty

A lower blepharoplasty will help remove drooping lower eyelids along with any puffy bags under the eyes. It can reposition excess fat and unwanted wrinkles. The scar for a lower blepharoplasty is usually hidden under the eyelash line or on the inner aspect of the lower lid.

You may need a combined upper and lower blepharoplasty if you want a completely rejuvenated appearance around the eyes, and this is usually more common in older patients where gravity has taken its toll.

Dr Bill Lyon is well-experienced in both upper and lower blepharoplasties and will advise what is best for you.

BROW LIFT

A brow lift repositions the eyebrows to give the eyes a fresher, more open and youthful look. It can also:

  • Correct wrinkles between the eyes
  • Reduce the appearance of heavy eyelids
  • Create a more pleasing shape and arch to the brows
  • Reduce wrinkles, lines and ingrained facial expressions on your forehead

Skin laxity and wrinkling above and between the brows can be caused by your pattern of facial expressions (for example, frequent frowning), which are almost impossible to change . Marked wrinkling between the eyes due to this type of muscle activity can be reduced during your brow lift, which is ideal for reversing the effects of hard work, stress or gravity for patients who want to turn back the clock.

Normal facial expression and adequate brow movements are preserved, however it is essential to choose a surgeon who has the right training and experience to perform surgery on the face to avoid an unnatural or "pulled" look. There are different techniques for a brow lift relating to where the incisions are made, and Dr Bill Lyon will discuss which technique will suit you.

THREAD LIFT

A thread lift involves the use of temporary sutures to produce a subtle but visible lift in the skin around the face. Instead of surgically removing loose facial skin, portions of the face are resuspended. This has the effect of pulling back the skin and tightening the face. This is ideal to:

  • Lift and reposition sagging skin on the face
  • Restore the contour of the cheeks
  • Lift nasolabial folds and jowls
  • Re-establish a natural and youthful facial shape
  • Re-establish a stronger jawline
  • Improve skin quality.

The recovery time is minimal compared to traditional facelift surgery, with low risk for scarring and bruising.

Dr Bill Lyon uses a number of different types of thread depending on what he feels is most suitable for the patient. He is widely experienced in these threads and has been involved with teaching and organising guidelines for the use of threads in Asia.

NECK LIPOSUCTION

Liposuction is a technique for excess fat removal that can help:

  • Contouring the neck
  • Tighten sagging skin
  • Reduce double chin
  • Eliminate extra fat around the neck and jaw
  • Smooth out fat pockets in areas of stubborn fat

Liposuction involves inserting a cannula via tiny incisions and working it underneath the skin into the deeper layers of fat. The isolated area of excess fat is then artfully removed to leave behind a pleasing contour to the neck.

Additional modalities such as ultrasound may be added to improve the overall effect. Fat transfer can be performed to add volume to any areas of deficiency.

Liposuction is not to be mistaken for a weight loss tool. It works best on patients near to their goal weight with areas of stubborn fat not eliminated with exercise or diet.

You should expect some discomfort after the liposuction procedure, however your surgeon will help you to manage any pain with medications. You will need at least several days off work but can start regular, gentle exercise within this time frame as this will help with skin retraction.

Cosmetic Surgery

ABDOMINOPLASTY

Abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck) improves body contour and achieves a smoother shape to the abdomen for both women and men. It is ideal for:

  • Contouring the body after pregnancy
  • Removing excess skin after weight loss
  • Slimming the shape of the body after the effects of ageing
  • Eliminating fat around the belly
  • Increasing strength and tone of the abdominal muscles
  • Relieving incontinence or pain as a result of weak abdominal muscles

A full abdominoplasty involves the removal of excess skin and fat and the repairing of any muscle separation (this tends to be more common after childbirth). The abdominal muscles and their tissues are pulled together and tightened.

Dr Bill Lyon will work towards ensuring your incisions are as inconspicuously placed as possible, but there will be a few well-placed scars.

A circumferential body lift is a more extensive tummy tuck involving an incision around the entirety of the lower body and can also help lift the buttock and thigh skin.

You should plan for at least a few weeks recovery time, with at least two to four weeks recommended off work, with normal physical activities including exercise not recommended for at least four to six weeks after the surgery. This allows your body time to heal including the incisions and stitches. You may have drains, bruising, swelling, tightness and discomfort which Dr Bill Lyon will help you to manage with medication and aftercare advice.

Abdominoplasties are a common procedure and (with the right surgeon and care) the results can be life-changing.

BREAST AUGMENTATION

Breast augmentation

Breast augmentation with implants is the most common elective surgery in the world. Many patients have the surgery for cosmetic reasons, usually to increase the size or change the shape and size of the breast. Many women also have a breast augmentation as a reconstructive surgery after a mastectomy.

There are two types of breast implants: silicone and saline filled. There are many different shapes and sizes to choose from (such as round or teardrop), as well as the surface type (smooth or textured). You should discuss your goals with your surgeon so you can identify which size and shape suits you best. Ultimately it’s about what you want and what is realistic. Dr Bill Lyon will discuss your goals with you.

Two breast implants are placed either under or over your chest muscles and entirely underneath the breast. The surgeon will discuss with you where your scars will be.

Risks and complications from breast augmentation surgery are rare, but may include haematoma, infection, capsular contracture, malposition or rupture. All potential risks should be addressed by your surgeon at your initial consultation.

Your new breasts will take a few months before they start to look and feel more natural and to show the final result. During the initial days, weeks and even months, there is usually swelling and bruising, along with scar healing, and the results take time.

Also available:

  • Areolar reduction
  • Inverted nipple / nipple reduction
  • Gynecomastia (man boobs)

Breast reduction

Breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, reduces excess breast size, volume and weight along with lifting the breasts. There are many issues that come from having oversized breasts including:

  • Physical pain in the neck, back or shoulders
  • Fat necrosis – the depressions commonly seen in your shoulders from bra strap pressure
  • Bad posture
  • Skin irritation
  • Skin infection under the breasts
  • Trouble finding clothes or bras to fit
  • Embarrassment and social awkwardness
  • Intimacy issues
  • Fear to partake in sports or social activities

The procedure involves removing the fat, skin and glandular tissue of the breast. Your nipples and areolas may also need repositioning depending on the position of the new breasts. A breast reduction is often combined with a breast lift, as larger breasts will often be associated with sagging and drooping and require some lift after they have been reduced.

As with any breast surgery, there could be a loss of nipple sensation or reduced capacity to breastfeed. If you are planning a breast reduction before starting a family, discuss this with your surgeon to minimise risk.

Most patients experience a dramatic improvement in their quality of life immediately after breast reduction. They not only feel better physically but are able to wear new clothing for the first time and can participate in new activities and sports.

Revision breast augmentation

Revision breast augmentation corrects problems that result from a previous breast augmentation surgery or dissatisfaction from the results of a previous breast augmentation. Women may also seek revision breast augmentation because their personal cosmetic goals change. The other reasons you might consider this procedure include:

  • Changing the size, shape or position of the breast implant
  • Giving the breasts a more natural and symmetrical shape and feel
  • Correcting capsular contracture that results from scar tissue around the implants
  • Correcting a double bubble (a crease across the lower part of the breast giving the appearance of two breast mounds)
  • Leaking or ruptured implants
  • Hardening or rippling of implants
  • Deflation of saline implants
  • Dissatisfaction with a previous augmentation

Dr Bill Lyon commonly sees women who are unhappy with their current breast augmentation or had a surgery that did not meet their expectations. It is essential to communicate with your surgeon so you can be sure to get the results you want.

A revision breast augmentation can be a more involved and difficult procedure than an initial breast augmentation, due mainly to the changes resulting from the initial operation. However, your surgeon will discuss your concerns, expectations and desired results and give you some realistic advice on what can be achieved from a revision breast augmentation surgery. He will do everything he can to ensure the journey for your revisional breast surgery is smooth and successful.

Breast lift

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure used to improve the look of sagging or droopy breasts. This is an ideal procedure for improving:

  • Sagging or droopy breasts that have lost their shape and “perkiness”
  • Flatter, extended or longer shaped breasts
  • Nipples that fall below your breast crease when unsupported
  • Nipples and areolas that point down
  • Stretched skin and enlarged areolas
  • Uneven breasts where one is higher than the other
  • Asymmetrical breasts where one is larger or a different shape than the other

Sagging breasts can affect a woman’s confidence but can also present physical issues such as swinging breasts, inability to find clothes that fit properly, reduced self-esteem and other issues.

A breast lift does not involve the insertion of an implant and is suitable for women who are happy with the size and volume of their breasts, but just want them lifted, raised or reshaped. When you undergo breast lift surgery, the surgeon will contour the breasts as the tissues are tightened and reshaped and extra skin is removed.

One of the most important things when planning a breast lift is to ensure your surgeon understands exactly what you want to achieve. Considerations include the shape of your breasts, positioning of nipples and the size and appearance of the areola. Most surgeons recommend waiting to have a breast lift until you have finished having children and breastfeeding, as otherwise you risk requiring a second lift later.

THIGH LIFT

Thigh lifts to the inner and/or outer thigh involve an incision on the inside of the thigh, from which excess skin and fat are removed. Tightening the skin in the inside of the thigh will tighten the skin all the way around the thigh. This is usually combined with liposuction to remove more fat and further improve the contour of the thighs.

Thigh lifts are ideal for:

  • Removing stubborn areas of fat
  • Contouring the thighs after weight loss
  • Eliminating excess fat around the thighs
  • Tightening excess and loose skin after weight loss
  • Treating cellulite
  • Tightening skin after liposuction

Surgery on the thighs involves very minimal movement and physical activity for at least a few days after the procedure and then it is only slowly introduced over the following days and weeks. Some discomfort is expected, however prescribed medication should help minimise any pain. At least two weeks off work is required with normal routine only advised after six to eight weeks. Scars will be located in different positions depending on whether an inner or outer thigh lift has been performed; some patients may require both.

Most surgeons advise that a patient must have achieved a stable and satisfactory weight for at least six to 12 months before having a thigh lift. This avoids having to have a second thigh lift if you lose more weight after the procedure.

BRACHIOPLASTY

Brachioplasty (or arm lift) involves an incision in the armpit and down along the inside of the arm, through which excess skin and fat are removed. Because the arm is a cylinder, tightening the skin on the inner arm tightens the skin all the way around the arm. Brachioplasty is often combined with arm liposuction to remove excess fat and further improve the contour. It is effective for:

  • Removing loose or saggy skin on the underside of the arms due to weight loss, age or hereditary factors
  • Eliminating pockets of excess, stubborn fat
  • Toning the upper arms
  • Contouring the shape of the arms
  • Tightening loose skin, especially after liposuction

Generally, incisions extend from the axilla down the inside of the arm towards the elbow and are placed in the most inconspicuous place as possible.

Following the procedure, you should be prepared with help at home and plan for at least two to three weeks off work, with normal physical activities and exercise only being possible after at least four to six weeks.

OTOPLASTY

Otoplasty (also called ear surgery or ear pinning) involves re-positioning or reshaping the ears. The procedure is especially effective for:

  • Fixing unusual or protruding ears
  • Reshaping oversized earring holes
  • Completely redesigning the ear due to trauma or cancer
  • Refining protruding or large ears
  • Creating more proportional, symmetrical and attractive ears
  • Restoring confidence and self-esteem
  • Repairing the ear lobe

Otoplasty incisions are usually made behind the ear so the scarring is barely visible once healed. Ear surgery usually requires wrapping a bandage around the ears and head for up to one week after the procedure.

FACE LIFT

Face lift with neck lift

A face lift can dramatically improve the appearance of your face and neck, combatting concerns such as:

  • Loose, sagging tissues of the mid-face
  • Deep folds of loose skin at the sides of the nose and mouth
  • Jowls or loss of definition of the jaw line
  • Excess fat or loose skin causing loss of definition and hanging of tissues in the neck

A face lift is sometimes combined with procedures for simultaneous correction of such areas as forehead, eyelid or chin, to produce a balanced more youthful appearance for the whole face. Most face lift patients want to achieve a more youthful look, without appearing different. They want to turn back the clock, without looking as though they’ve had anything done.

A face lift can reduce sagging skin on the neck in some patients, however in others a face lift might also be combined with a neck lift to get the best results. Modern techniques involve repositioning the deeper layers of tissue and muscle to help achieve a more natural appearance. Experienced surgeons such as Dr Bill Lyon are able to minimise scarring and ensure any scars are well hidden behind the ears or the hairline.

Also available:

  • Facial implants
  • Facial fat transfer

Mid-face lift

A mid-face lift helps to elevate the cheeks. It is a very powerful procedure as it transforms the shape of the face from age deflation to arched youth. We lose facial fat as we age and mid-facial curves are naturally one of the features of a young face. Ignoring the cheek lift will result in a less natural look.

NECK LIFT

The neck is generally one of the first places that show signs of ageing. A neck lift, or platysmaplasty, involves the restructuring and tightening of the neck muscle.

It is an ideal treatment for:

  • Combatting skin deterioration caused by sun damage and weight loss
  • Aged, sagging and loose skin on the neck
  • Improving skin's natural elasticity
  • Removing any extra fat or skin from the neck
  • Eliminate banding (thick lines around the neck)
  • Reducing double chin or an undefined jawline
  • Improving jowls (fatty, drooping bits of skin that appear around your jawline)
  • Contouring the shape of the neck and defining the jawline
  • Tightening the skin and removing wrinkles
  • Extending the appearance of the neck
  • Restructuring and tightening of the neck muscles
  • Re-draping of the skin to create a better defined, smoother neck

A neck lift can be combined with liposuction to remove any excess fatty deposits to create better contour and definition. It can also be combined with a face lift to get the best results, or non-surgical procedures such as fillers and anti-wrinkle injections to create a well-defined contour.

Scars from a neck lift can be hidden behind the ears or under the chin; Dr Bill Lyon is extremely skilled in minimising scarring.

Neck lifts are extremely popular in the 40 – 60 age group, however those with a genetic tendency for a double chin, or those who have had massive weight loss, may require a neck lift sooner or even later in life.

Important note: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Other Services

Full-body skin examinations

Regular full-body skin examinations are vital for catching cancers before they become serious. Skin exams take about 15 - 30 minutes, and the doctor will start by asking about your skin cancer risk factors and general health. You will need to undress to your underwear. If you wish, we can provide a blanket or gown for you to wear while the doctor inspects your body from head to toe, looking for abnormal moles or spots. We will not examine the genital area unless you have any spots in that region which particularly concern you.

Assessment with dermoscopy

The doctor will closely examine any unusual spots using a dermatoscope. This close-up perspective helps us assess whether a mole is normal or abnormal. It is a completely painless process that has been proven to increase the rate of skin cancer detection. We may also photograph a few spots to monitor changes over time, as this can be indicative of skin cancer.

Diagnosis through biopsies

If the doctor finds a suspicious spot that might be skin cancer, a sample of skin will be removed and sent to a pathology lab to be thoroughly examined under a microscope. This is called a biopsy, and it helps confirm whether the suspicious spot is cancerous. The most common biopsy techniques are shave and punch biopsies, which are both done under a local anaesthetic. A shave biopsy involves shaving off the top layer of skin with a small surgical blade, while a punch biopsy uses a tool like a tiny cookie cutter to remove all the layers of skin.

Skin cancer treatments

The treatment you receive for skin cancer will depend on the type, size and location of the skin cancer, and whether it has spread to other parts of your body. We offer various surgical and non-surgical treatments, including excisions of the tumour and surrounding tissue to ensure all the cancerous cells are entirely removed, curettage which is the method of scraping and burning the skin cancer, cryotherapy which is the method of freezing off the skin cancer with liquid nitrogen, and topical applications of creams that stimulate the immune system and destroy skin cancer.

Skin repair and rejuvenation

We approach aesthetic medicine with the same level of respect and credibility as skin cancer medicine. We offer skin repair and rejuvenation treatments for anyone wishing to restore a natural, more youthful appearance to their skin. Our doctors have undergone formal training in this exciting medical field with the aim of providing your skin with a healthier and more refreshed look. Using the latest injectable treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and liquid gold facelift, our doctors will accurately and safely address your medical and cosmetic skin concerns.
