Summer, sunshine, and skin prep. Does it get any better than that? We don’t think so! Summer is just around the corner, and although you might be focused on switching over your wardrobe, it’s also time to take a look at your skincare routine. The cooler months are a trying time for healthy skin, and this year we’ve had to take on even more challenges than usual (we’re looking at you ‘maskne’!).
Now, before you start adding every other skincare product to your online shopping cart, let’s take a look at what you really need to do, and use, to achieve that refreshing summer glow.
1. Exfoliate, otherwise known as the first step to tick off your pre-summer to-do list. Your skin probably isn’t in the best condition after the winter season (no offence). Regularly exfoliating is the most effective way to tackle any dry patches or dead skin cells you might have hanging around. The key to successfully exfoliating is not to over do it. We recommend doing an at-home facial once a week, and when you can, looking into a professional treatment for an added boost, such as microdermabrasion or a peel.
2. Stay hydrated. We know you’ve heard this one before, but you’re going to hear it again. Keep your skin hydrated! During summer dehydration is especially prevalent due to extra time spent outdoors, and although drinking an adequate amount of water will help combat this, it’s important to know it may not be enough.
As well as regularly drinking water, keep in mind hydrating facials and treatments that will give your skin that summer glow. A few of our personal favourites are medi-aesthetic facials and HydraFacial treatment.
3. Change up your skincare routine. Along with the summer sunshine also comes humidity… and often lots of it. Rather than using the same skincare routine that you finally perfected during winter (sorry!), it might be time to switch up a few products. The first being moisturiser.
During the cooler weather our skin produces less oil, hence why we need those richer products to keep hydrated. But when the warmer months are upon us, a lightweight and non-greasy moisturiser or serum is all you need!
4. Sunscreen is your best friend, but you already knew that. In case you’re not already, wear sunscreen, preferably a broad-spectrum sunscreen between 30 to 50 SPF, every day. This sun protection measure will help you avoid sun damage, pigmentation and wrinkles, just to name a few.
A few extra tips; reapply every two hours (and immediately after spending time in the water), limit your time in the sun and take other preventative measures such as wearing a hat and sunglasses.
